SELOUS GAME RESERVE

The topography of the park varies from rolling savannah woodland, grasslands plains and rocky outcrops cut by Rufiji River and its tributaries, the Kilombero and Luwegu, which covers the greatest catchments area in East Africa.

The Rufiji, which flows from North to South, provides the life-blood of the Selous .Sailing or rafting down the water way is a superb method of seeing game especially between June to October.

Crocodiles, hippo, and array of grazing antelope can be seen. Linked to Rufiji is Lake Tangala, where waterbuck, reedbuck, and bushbuck gather at the water edge.
Its long grassland, safari enthusiasts may get a chance to see rare sable antelope, greater kudu or lion.

Night drives from the lodge provide the opportunity to seek the nocturnal animals of the region such as leopard, bush babies and wild dogs.

Here you will experience the apprehension and excitement of tracking big game on foot and have be closer look at the bird life and vegetation, or even a guided walking safari with an armed guide. River boat safaris are operated as part of a full day game drive to Lake Tagalala.

The river boat offers great opportunities to get close to hippos and crocodiles and to observe the prolific bird life around the lake.

The dry season sets in during June to November and is the best time for game viewing along the river.

Elephants come out of the bush at that time and predators are more commonly seen.

The Rainy Season set in during January to April is wonderful for birdlife and lush scenery but many roads become impassable after heavy rains.

December to February is still good for game viewing but can be rather hot and humid. The lodges are usually closed from March to the end of May.
