RUAHA NATIONAL PARK

One of Tanzania best kept wildlife secrets covering area of 10,300 Sq Kms with altitude of 1,000 m. Previously inaccessibility has ensured it has remained virtually unchanged for centuries, unaffected by the ravages of mankind.
Its 2nd largest national park and with biggest elephant sanctuary .Its name derived from the Great River Ruaha which flows along its eastern boarder, creating spectacular gorges.

Flowing into River Rufiji , the Great Ruaha is home of hippo and crocodile . waterbuck, reedbuck, buffalo venture to the rivers edge to drink, attraction the attention of leopard, hyena, wild dog, jackal and lion. Various antelope species such as kudu, impala, sable and roan antelope, grant gazelle, tiny dik-dik thrive in the grasslands bordering the river alongside giraffe, zebra, warthogs, mongoose, porcupine, wildcat and civet.


Birdlife is prolific, over 370 species have been recorded which are not found in Northern Tanzania. Eurasian migrants flock to Ruaha twice a year March to April and October to November joining the resident kingfisher, hornbills, sunbirds, egrets and plovers.

Best months for game viewing are during dry season from May to December, when the animals are concentrated around the shrinking water-courses.

Getting there : 10 hours drive or 1.30 hours flight from Dar es salaam.
